Malayalam actress Mamta Mohandas announced on Sunday that she has been diagnosed with vitiligo, an autoimmune skin disorder. To share this news, she posted a photo of herself on Instagram along with a poem. In her post, she wrote, “Dear Sun, I embrace you now like I have never before. So Spotted, I’m losing color… I rise even before you every morning, to see you glimmer your first ray through the haze. Give me all you’ve got.. for I will be indebted, here on out and forever by your grace.”
This is not the first time Mohandas has faced a health challenge, as she previously overcame cancer and Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The outpouring of support from her fans in the comments section was heartwarming, with many praising her for her strength and courage.
Vitiligo is a chronic skin disorder that causes pale white spots to appear on the skin. It is caused by a deficiency of melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin. Vitiligo can affect any part of the skin, but it most commonly affects the face, neck, and hands, as well as skin wrinkles. People with vitiligo should take extra care to protect their skin from sunburn by using sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF).
Symptoms of vitiligo include white patches on the skin, most commonly on the face, wrists, armpits, groin, and genitals. It can also appear on the scalp, causing hair in the affected area to turn white or gray. There is no known cure for vitiligo, but treatments such as skin camouflage cream, steroid creams, and phototherapy can help minimize the appearance of white patches. The causes of vitiligo are not fully understood, but it is thought to be connected to immune system dysfunction, genetics, and triggering events such as stress or skin trauma.
