Many people have reported cases of losing clumps of hair, usually noticed while brushing or bathing after having suffered from COVID 19. These stories are confirmed and widely noticed and have raised questions. Questions like whether it will happen to everybody who tests positive to the virus or whether it is a permanent condition left in the wake of recovery.
WHY THE HAIR LOSS?
Hair loss from COVID 19 infection is called Telogen Effluvium. This form of hair loss is not specific to COVID infections, however. It can also be noticed in people who have just gone through a significant stressful period, people who have undergone surgery and also those who have suffered from health conditions causing very high fever. When it does occur, telogen effluvium usually lasts between 6 to 9 months before the hair starts to grow again. It typically does not affect the entire scalp.
When these stressors are present, they disrupt hair growth, causing them to pause at a resting phase known as the telogen phase. During this telogen phase, the hair rests for about 2 to 3 months, after which time it starts to fall off for the growth of new ones. It is not a permanent condition as hair growth returns to normal when the stressor trigger is wholly eliminated, as in recovery from COVID 19 infection.
WHAT YOU CAN DO IF YOU SUFFER FROM HAIR LOSS
There are some lifestyle modifications and home remedies that can be applied when hair loss is noticed. In some cases, they may not be effective, and if this should happen, it is a pointer that more professional opinions should be sought.
•. Avoid strains on the hair
Certain things put a lot of tension and strain on the hair. When hair loss is noticed, avoid making hairstyles and covers that pull at the hair. Instead of braiding them in this period, consider wearing them loose.
• Use of minoxidil creams
Minoxidil, also called Rogaine, has been in use for a very long time. It is a product applied topically to the scalp to promote hair regrowth.
• Diet and supplements
Food’s rich in amino acids, vitamins E and D are good for hair growth. Also, the use of oil-based hair products helps in preventing dryness and cracks in the scalp. This, in effect, prevents further hair loss.
If these measures do not help prevent hair loss and it persists for more than 9 months, it could be time to pay a visit to a medical professional for a more detailed assessment and advanced treatment measures. In all, post covid hair loss should not be a major cause of concern. It is temporary, and it can be managed effectively.
