Plastic surgery has become increasingly popular in the last few years. Deciding to have plastic surgery should be a carefully thought out decision, and most importantly, choosing the right plastic surgeon. Patients should choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who has the high level of education needed and who can yield optimal results.
Dr. Joubin Gabbay, board-certified plastic surgeon, was recently named one of the top ten plastic surgeons in California in an article by the California Herald. Dr. Gabbay’s dedication to helping patients achieve their desired change in the safest and most predictable manner has furthered his success.
Dr. Gabbay was born in Iran in 1974, but because of the Iranian revolution, Dr. Gabbay and his family moved to Beverly Hills, California four years later. From an early age, Dr. Gabbay was fascinated by the Renaissance and Leonardo da Vinci. Growing up with a father, who was an architect, Dr. Gabbay took architecture classes in high school and considered pursuing a career in architecture for many years.
“I now often say that my dad and I do the same job, we just use different materials!” says Dr. Gabbay during the interview.
Dr. Gabbay graduated with honors from the University of California San Diego with a degree in molecular biology. While studying in college, he decided to minor in art in order to get the most well-rounded education. In his art classes, he made unique sculptures, created show-stopping performance pieces, and even studied film.
After graduating, Dr. Gabbay moved to Richmond, Virginia to study medicine at the Medical College of Virginia. He is thankful for the opportunity to meet people of different perspectives and experience places that were different from what he was used to in southern California. While studying, Dr. Gabbay decided that surgery was the right career path for him. Thanks to his passion for architecture, Dr. Gabbay liked to use his hands to create and immediately see the results of his work.
During the interview, Dr. Gabbay says, “It is a specialty that is based in human anatomy… Something I’ve always loved. I would always say ‘you can play with anatomy in plastic surgery.’”
Upon completing medical school, Dr. Gabbay was selected to study at Cedars-Sinai prestigious general surgery residency where he trained in all aspects of surgery for seven years. At this time, Dr. Gabbay published over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters as a researcher in the division of plastic surgery at UCLA. After his time at Cedars Sinai, Dr. Gabbay was chosen for UCLA’s plastic surgery fellowship. Dr. Gabbay worked with the leaders in the world of plastic surgery where he learned of the most innovative techniques. Dr. Gabbay finished his training at UCLA in 2011.
Over that time, he grew and developed his private practice where he is the Medical Director of Gabbay Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, California. Dr. Gabbay’s attention to detail and caring demeanor leaves his patients with exceptional results.
Dr. Gabbay specializes in breast and body contouring. The most common procedures that he carries out are liposuction, Brazilian butt lifts, tummy tucks, breast augmentation, reductions, and complex revisions. Dr. Gabbay believes in delivering the results that his patients envision. He feels that his patient’s experience is key to success.
Another speciality of his is buccal fat reduction and he performs this procedure more than anyone in Los Angeles. His mentor, Dr. Henry Kawamoto, was a pioneer in describing the anatomy of this specific pocket of fat in the cheek. From Dr. Gabbay’s past work experience in body contouring, he became fascinated by the technology to perform such procedures.
Dr. Gabbay’s goal of his practice is to help people achieve something that is meaningful for them. He ensures his patients are comfortable from the first encounter along the entire process and beyond. His well-rounded education and unique perspective allow him to make well thought-out decisions for his patients.
“I truly feel that the most critical factor in successfully delivering the results my patients seek is clear and detailed communication. It is critical that my patient and I are on exactly the same page before we ever step foot in the operating room,” says Dr. Gabbay. During consultations, he goes into detail to try to understand what his patient is seeking. He also explains carefully what he can deliver and what their body will allow.
