In the stillness of my recovery from postpartum psychosis, a period marked by the harrowing moment I nearly leaped from a moving truck, I was struck by the stark absence of conversations surrounding maternal mental health. Long before the CDC began tracking maternal suicide rates in 2019, I felt the weight of the silence enveloping this critical issue. This silence, I realized, had claimed too many lives – lives that could have been saved through awareness, education, and open dialogue.
Today, as a nurse and the founder of Cherished Mom, I carry the echoes of my own experience and the stories of mothers who did not survive, fueling my mission to shift this haunting narrative. Our latest endeavor, IsMomOK.org, transcends being just a platform; it stands as a lifeboat in the tumultuous waters of maternal mental health. It offers a sanctuary for mothers, providing crucial support, resources, and education to combat maternal suicide, an unfortunate leading cause of death in the postpartum phase.
“A mother’s love knows no bounds, yet her struggles often remain unseen. Let us shine a light on her silent battles, for in that illumination, we find the path to prevention.”
The postpartum period is a time of immense hormonal upheaval for mothers. Fluctuations in hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and oxytocin can have a significant impact on a mother’s mental health. The sudden drop in these hormones after childbirth can contribute to mood swings, anxiety, and depression, further underscoring the need for heightened awareness and support during this vulnerable time.
As we honor Suicide Awareness Month this September, a pivotal time to illuminate the prevalence of suicide, especially among postpartum mothers, it is alarming to note that over 20% of maternal deaths are linked to suicide, underscoring the urgent need for action. This issue impacts women from various cultural backgrounds, with alarming disparities in suicidal thoughts:
Asian women are nearly nine times more likely than white women to experience suicidal thoughts in the postpartum period.
Black women are twice as likely as white women to grapple with thoughts of suicide during this phase.
Latina women are almost twice as likely as white women to battle thoughts of suicide.
Among Indian women, the suicide death rate, particularly during the postpartum period, surpasses the global average, emphasizing the pressing need for intervention.
Through IsMomOK.org, our vision is to cultivate a nurturing haven where mothers can access not only information but authentic understanding and unwavering support. Our resources are crafted to empower families and healthcare providers, equipping them with the tools essential for identifying and addressing perinatal mental health crises effectively.
Our campaign seeks to dismantle the stigma surrounding maternal mental health and eradicate maternal suicide. Vital resources such as the Suicide Prevention Hotline (988) and the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline (1-833-TLC-MAMA) stand ready to assist those in need. By disseminating resources and extending support, we can safeguard the mental well-being of mothers and spearhead change in preventing maternal suicide.
Join us in this critical mission. Explore IsMomOK.org, share our resources, and become a part of a movement striving to revolutionize the landscape of maternal mental health. Together, we can ensure that no mother endures the darkness I faced and that every cry for help is met with empathy and action.
As we approach the Cherished Mom Butterfly Release Memorial event, we reflect on those we’ve lost and renew our pledge to those still grappling with maternal mental health challenges. This event serves not just as a commemoration but as a rallying call—a symbol of metamorphosis and optimism. Moreover, we are delighted to invite you to a virtual Lunch & Learn event titled “Maternal Suicide Prevention: Awareness and Action,” scheduled for September 30th, the concluding day of Maternal Suicide Awareness Month. This session aims to engage the public and healthcare professionals in a crucial dialogue about maternal mental health and suicide prevention, with the objective of empowering attendees with knowledge and tools to champion maternal mental health in their communities.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our sponsors, including Lamar Advertising for their PSA Partnership and Reunion Neuroscience, whose unwavering support magnifies our efforts to save lives and cultivate brighter futures. Their dedication serves as a testament to the power of community and the impact of collective action.
In a world where maternal mental health is often relegated to the shadows, let us emerge as beacons of light and hope. Visit IsMomOK.org and join us in resoundingly declaring, “Yes, mom is OK, because we are here to assure she is.”
