Rising pop songwriter Nastiya Kai unveiled her dark, hypnotic single ‘Bury Me’ on October 27th, 2023. ‘Bury Me’ is a teaser to her forthcoming debut album, set for release in early 2024. With her music garnering more than 141 500 streams and counting, Nastiya Kai is making waves in the industry and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.
Originally from Moscow and now based between Moscow, Paris, LA and New York, Nastiya Kai is an entirely self-taught musician. She began playing piano at a young age, starting to write songs at the age of ten. Struggling with bullying, mental health and loneliness in school, Nastiya Kai found solace quietly playing guitar in her boarding school dormitory. After shifting careers, universities, countries and more, she has found that music has always been a constant, and began releasing singles in 2023.
With a sound that has been compared to Caroline Polachek and Sub Urban, Nastiya Kai finds inspiration in a vast range of genres and artists, citing the likes of David Bowie, Daughter, The Naked and Famous, Crystal Castles, The Prodigy and Bob Dylan as but a few who have influenced her. Carving a place for herself in the ever-growing pop world, her music is for fans of avant-pop luminaries such as Billie Eilish, Grimes and VÉRITÉ.
‘Bury Me’ is a dark track steeped in minimal ambient instrumentation that is occasionally peppered with contrastingly tender, folky acoustic guitar, which eventually gives way to a shadowy electronic drop at the end of the song. The track’s genre-bending production complements Nastiya Kai’s hauntingly potent vocals, her lyrics poignantly exploring themes of misplaced guilt, inner turmoil and blame.
Nastiya Kai shared: “‘Bury Me’ is about blaming yourself for all the horrible things someone else is responsible for. When someone is clearly out there to hurt you but you keep asking yourself if there’s anything you did wrong and what can you do to fix it even when you’re already underground as it is. I built it in a way where it takes you through this emotional rollercoaster. It starts off as a ballad, then evolves into a country-inspired chorus only to build up into a major electronic drop by the end.”
