Sure, the holiday season is behind us and we all know how stressful that time of year can be. However, just because we’re in a new year doesn’t mean everything is all carefree and roses.
Almost everyone has some sort of daily stress and of course it’s human nature to feel stress, whether it’s stress that arises in response to traumatic events or the frustrations of normal day-to-day life. While much of the stress in our day-to-day lives is somewhat easy to manage, such as an irritating morning meeting, there are some stressors you may need a little help managing.
While someone battling skin cancer has a lot more to deal with than someone dealing with generalized stress, there are a few things you can do to help manage your mental health no matter what your stress level is.
This doesn’t mean that you’ll find all the answers here and that your stress will disappear entirely, but we want to share some tips that may help.
Get More Sleep
It’s no secret that lack of sleep can greatly affect multiple aspects of your health, but you may not realize that it can have a huge effect on your ability to handle stress. Of course, stress may well be the reason for not being able to fall or stay asleep but whether you regularly suffer from insomnia or just don’t feel rested a few times a week, consider trying the following:
- CBD – Products like sleep gummies have become rather popular in recent years when it comes to managing anxiety and helping with sleep.
- Gadget shutdown – Turn off your television, tablet, smartphone, and other devices at least 30 minutes before you plan to try to sleep. They emit what’s known as “blue light” and can interfere with your brain’s ability to shift into sleep mode. If you absolutely must complete some work before bed, get a blue light filter for your laptop.
- Pressure therapy – Available in a variety of options, a weighted blanket may help you get a better night’s rest thanks to its deep pressure therapy.
- Shut out the world – Take a hot shower or bath and relax. Use blackout blinds, especially if you work nights and sleep days. Turn on relaxing music or nature sounds. Give your mind something else to focus on other than trying to fall asleep.
Meditation and Yoga
While it may sound a bit cliché, short sessions of meditation or yoga every day can work wonders on managing stress. It doesn’t even have to be a full-on traditional routine with a meditation cushion or yoga mat. Simply take 10-15 minutes every day to sit in silence or listen to relaxing white noise. Then close your eyes, concentrate on your breathing, and just “be one” with yourself.
You may be surprised at how well this particular tip works and how much it can help in your quest to lead a healthier life overall.
As a bonus pro tip: wrap yourself in that weighted blanket for an added stress and anxiety reducer.
Take Care of Yourself
Some of the best ways to manage daily stress is by taking care of your body and basic health. Getting plenty of sleep and meditating are good starting points, but if you’re going through a particularly stressful time, you may want to consider doing the following:
- Start exercising regularly
- Eat healthy, well-balanced meals
- Stretch throughout the day
- Avoid excessive alcohol and substance use
Everyone has varied stressors in life, and while the triggers may be different, incorporating a few best practices into your daily routine could help alleviate the unwelcome intrusion.
