Pakistan’s political climate is becoming increasingly volatile with the recent arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan by the National Accountability Bureau in a corruption case. The situation escalated when Khan’s supporters took to the streets in violent protests, resulting in vandalism and arson across the country.
In response to the courts granting bail to Khan, Pakistan’s opposition leader, Raja Riaz Ahmad Khan, said that Khan should have been hanged publicly and criticized the judges for welcoming him. Riaz’s comments have drawn criticism from the political spectrum and have been condemned as inappropriate and incendiary.
The violent protests by Khan’s supporters have further escalated the political tensions in Pakistan. The protesters burnt vehicles, stormed Pakistan Army headquarters, attacked the corps commander’s house in Lahore, and torched the residence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Politicians, civil society, and the media have widely condemned the protests.
In response to the protests, Pakistan’s ruling coalition staged a demonstration outside the top court, claiming that recent judicial judgments offered blanket relief to Imran Khan. The leaders and supporters of the PDM held a protest outside the Supreme Court complex in Islamabad, shouting slogans against the SC chief justice and in favour of the Pakistan Army.
Amidst the chaos, Imran Khan urged citizens to stage peaceful protests, citing that it would end Pakistan’s dream once the Constitution and Supreme Court were destroyed. He also warned that his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, might get banned by the ruling government in the coming days.
The recent events in Pakistan have highlighted the need for peaceful and constructive dialogue between political leaders to resolve the country’s political and economic issues. It is imperative that all parties work together to maintain peace and stability in the country and ensure that the democratic process is upheld. The future of Pakistan depends on its ability to address the challenges it faces peacefully and democratically.
