On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Indian National Congress, of defaming Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a remark about his surname. Gandhi is found guilty of 2019 criminal defamation and sentenced to two years in jail. The Congress leader was convicted under IPC Sections 499 and 500.
Rahul Gandhi, however, has been granted bail and his sentence is suspended for 30 days to let him appeal the decision. BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi filed a case against Rahul Gandhi for saying “How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?”
“My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, non-violence the means to get it,” Rahul Gandhi gave his first comment post the verdict on his Twitter, quoting Mahatma Gandhi.
“Scared rulers are pulling out all stops to suppress the voice of @RahulGandhi ji. My brother has never been afraid, nor will he ever be. He will continue to speak the truth. Will continue to raise the voice of the people of the country. The power of truth and the love of crores of countrymen are with him,” tweeted Priyanka Vadra Gandhi in support of her brother.
