Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka, who was with the national squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia, was detained on charges of sexual assault. Sources claim that the detention was made from the team hotel in Sydney’s central business area in relation to a 29-year-old woman’s alleged sexual abuse accusation.
A New South Wales police statement said: “The woman met with the man after communicating with him for a number of days via an online dating application; it’s alleged he then sexually assaulted her on the evening of Wednesday 2 November 2022.”
The 31-year-old Gunathilaka was arrested and taken to Sydney City police station in the early hours of Sunday and charged with four charges of sexual intercourse without consent.
The Sri Lankan team’s loss to England on Sunday resulted in their elimination from the tournament. In a statement, Sri Lanka Cricket promised to punish the player severely if proven guilty.
